As we enter the JOYful holiday season...

I hope everyone has had a wonderful Thanksgiving! This time of year often reminds me of a cute book called Turkey Claus by Wendi Silvano. It is about a turkey who has survived Thanksgiving but finds himself, yet again, on the menu for Christmas dinner. His hilarious ideas are a humorous and entertaining way of teaching children about resourcefulness and resilience. The time between Thanksgiving and New Years often seems like a blur. I often speak to RTE students about the importance of mindfulness. During this time, take a moment to pay attention to all of your senses (this is a good anger management technique too by the way). What are some things you are seeing, smelling, tasting, hearing and feeling as you go through your daily activities. Slow things down a bit by paying more attention to the here and now.

During the past month your students have been learning about improving their impulse control. We discuss the difference between "wants" and "needs" and practice how to "STOP, THINK and CHOOSE" before we say or do anything that might affect ourselves or others in an adverse way. I've loved challenging the classes to remain statues while various temptations are introduced (bubbles, Starburst candy, etc). They are surprised to learn that their ability to do so is an example of good impulse control. Especially hilarious has been the "freeze dance" activity. We have many students with some impressive moves let me tell ya!

I had a great time during our recent student-sponsored club day. We made candy-filled "Turkeys" while watching A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. It is important to include elements of "Sharpening the Saw" when working with students. Speaking of Sharpening the Saw, as a proud member of RTE's SIC (School Improvement Council), I'd like to remind you about the Screen Time Detox Challenge. I'm including a link to important facts that all parents and guardians should know about the impact of too much technology use in children (click on the cellphone/"NO" image). The challenge was technically over on the 22nd but it is a good idea to keep the concept in mind on an ongoing basis!

Please also remember that the Richland District 2 Choice Fair is November 27th at R2I2, and the Richland District 2 CATE (Career and Technology) Expo is December 4th at R2I2 (for 5th grade students)

I was honored to share about the RTE Leadership Block program at the November school board meeting. At the meeting to speak about her own experiences in the program was RTE alum, Tori Brown (thank you Tori!). You can view the video that was shared here.

Last but not least, CONGRATULATIONS to Shane Bates, our most recent Safety Patrol Officer of the month. It also pains me greatly :0) to offer congratulations to Clemson for their win in the 2018 Palmetto Bowl. Please share the picture below with your student as a visual representation of what true sportsmanship involves.
