Hello Round Top family! If you are like me you might be having a hard time finding your “flow” or natural groove working and learning from home. This is a hard concept to “teach”...you might be thinking “oh she’s talking about creating a schedule” or “she’s talking about goal setting”. Those things are valuable but that’s not what I’m really talking about. I’m talking about motivation. John Wooden was the coach of the UCLA men's basketball team who was a six time national coach of the year and won 10 NCAA national championships in 12 years...seven of which were in a row. He once said, "Don't let what you can't do interfere with what you can do." This is the inspiration for the next student lesson on recognizing negative or harmful thoughts (link below). If I’m being honest, not getting up daily and physically driving into work has been very hard on my own sense of motivation so I can imagine it is very difficult for you and your students. In trying to think of a way to help both parents and students with motivation and online learning, I came across a great video by Renee Jain at Go Zen. She talks about finding your flow and how to assess and assist students in doing so with digital learning motivation (link below). Elementary students LOVE fortune tellers or Cootie Catchers...whichever term you like to use. These are also provided by Go Zen and touch on many mindsets your student will be very familiar with already from our classroom lessons. The link for this is below as well as other links to activities related to the guidance lesson. As you’ve noticed, I’ve mentioned Go Zen quite frequently….please take a moment to visit the free Facebook page where all of these resources are available and you can also take part in parent/student discussions online (link below). Finally students love to say a quick “Hello” to my friend Rocky Racoon as we end lessons and transition back to classroom instruction. Below is a video link that reminds me of Rocky and may bring a smile to your faces. Most don’t think of Raccoons as pets but remember friends come in many unexpected forms but your eyes have to be open to the possibilities. Finally Mawi Asgedom will be offering a free webinar on May 7th about guidance with helping students avoid the "Covid-19 slide". Keep your eyes open, continue to find time for fun and remember this is all temporary.
